Do I need SEO if most of my work comes from referrals?

Word of mouth is brilliant, but nearly every referred customer still Googles you before they call. Here's how SEO supports referrals rather than replacing them.

How SEO supports referrals for small businesses

Plenty of small businesses in Tauranga and across the Bay of Plenty run almost entirely on word of mouth. If that's you, it's a great sign you do good work. So it's fair to ask: why bother with SEO at all?

The short answer is that referrals and SEO aren't competing. SEO makes your referrals work better, and it keeps work coming in when they slow down.

Referred customers still search for you

When a friend recommends a builder, accountant or hairdresser, most people don't pick up the phone straight away. They search your business name first to check your website, reviews and work. If they can't find you, or find an old, slow site, that warm referral can quietly go to someone else.

Referrals only reach people who already know someone

Word of mouth is limited to your existing customers' circles. SEO puts you in front of people who don't know anyone who's used you yet, but are searching right now for what you do, like "plumber Papamoa" or "web designer Tauranga".

Referrals go up and down

A key client moves away, a busy season ends, or a new competitor opens down the road. Relying on one source of work is risky. Showing up on Google gives you a steady second stream that you control.

What SEO looks like for a referral-based business

  • A clear, fast website that shows your services, location and how to get in touch.
  • A complete Google Business Profile, so you appear when people search your name or services nearby.
  • Asking happy referred customers for a Google review, which turns word of mouth into proof online.
  • Service and location pages that match how local customers actually search.

If your profile isn't showing up locally, read why your business might not be showing on Google Maps.

Where to start

An SEO audit is a good first step. It shows how you appear today and where the easy wins are. Ongoing monthly SEO packages start from $750 for businesses that want to keep growing, and if your website itself is holding you back, take a look at my website design services.
