Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps in Tauranga?

Five common reasons local businesses miss out on the Google map listings, and simple fixes you can start on today.

Why your business isn't showing on Google Maps

When someone searches "electrician Tauranga" or "hairdresser Mount Maunganui", Google usually shows a map with three local businesses before any websites. Being in those three spots can bring in a steady flow of calls. If you're not there, here are the most common reasons why.

1. Your Google Business Profile isn't set up or finished

Your free Google Business Profile is what appears on the map. If it hasn't been claimed and verified, or it's missing your categories, services, hours and photos, Google has less reason to show it.

2. Your details don't match everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be exactly the same on your website, Google profile, Facebook and directories like Yellow or NoCowboys. Small differences make Google less confident about who you are.

3. You don't have many recent reviews

Reviews are one of the biggest local ranking signals. A steady trickle of genuine reviews, with replies from you, tells Google and customers that you're active and trusted.

4. Your website doesn't mention where you work

Google uses your website to understand your services and location. If your pages never mention Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty or the suburbs you cover, it's harder to connect you with local searches. A well-built website makes this easy.

5. You're a service-area business with the wrong settings

If you work from home and travel to customers, like many tradies, you can hide your address and set service areas instead. Getting this wrong can stop you showing up where your customers are.

Quick checklist

  • Claim and verify your Google Business Profile.
  • Choose the most accurate main category and add your services.
  • Keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to each one.
  • Mention your local areas naturally on your website.
  • Add fresh photos and posts to your profile regularly.
